Every Sun - Family Sunday at the Museum - 1pm - Now there's even more reason for families to plan the weekend around a visit to Nassau County Museum of Art. Each Sunday the museum offers a 1 pm docent-led family walk-through of the exhibition and, beginning at 1:30 pm, supervised art activities for the whole family. 10/1 - The Story of Crystals - Call for times - Did you ever wonder how crystals form? Why they are shaped geometrically and what they are made of? The Garvies Point Museum and Preserve answers those questions and more in its new exhibit about crystals. The exhibit includes items used in everyday life, along with the minerals that are mined in order to produce them, as well as gemstones and jewelry with the natural mineral types from which they are made. A "mineral of the month" birthstone will be a regular feature of the exhibit. As part of the exhibit, museum geology curator George Alligaier has also assembled diagrams and photos of unique but lost geologic features throughout the U.S., such as Spirit Lake ( no longer in existence) at Mount St. Helens. 10/4 - A Day in the Life of a Book - Performance, 11-11:45am, Workshop, 12-12:45pm - Steven James Petruccio, the celebrated children's book illustrator, transports youngsters on an incredible journey in which an illustrated book goes from the story concept to the completed, published product. 10/4 - Rowdy Reptiles - 1-2pm - Snakes, lizards, and turtles. Come and meet a variety of reptiles and discover their unique adaptations which help them survive in habitats around the world. . 10/11 - 10/12 - The Mill Neck Family's Fall Harvest Festival - 9am-5pm - Are you looking for a place to bring the family for a fun-filled action packed day? Well, Mill Neck Manor is the place. Every year, when the 86-acre campus is dressed in autumn colors, Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf hosts a Fall Harvest Festival. The annual Festival, filled with food, special events and activities, is always the Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day Weekend. 10/17 - 10/19 - Oyster Festival - Fri 6-10 pm (thrill rides only), Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 11am-6pm - One of the East Coast's largest annual waterfront festivals! A key fund-raising event for local charities. The freshest seafood anywhere-as well as other delicious foods prepared on site, music, a craft tent, antiques, an exotic animal petting zoo, Tall Ships and thrill rides, all set to a background of Indian Summer sunshine. "Ultimate Air Dogs", canine jumpers from all along the Eastern Seaboard and throughout Canada will come to compete in this great visual treat-bring your camera! Saturday Night Fireworks! 10/18 - Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children's Festival - 10am-4pm - Family oriented fishing festival with fly fishing instruction, demonstrations, loaner rods, casting for pumpkins, pony rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting, and much more. Hempstead Lake State Park, West Hempstead 631-351-3510

10/18 - Fall Fair - 10am-4:30pm - The Fall Fair provides visitors the opportunity to learn from conservation and environmental groups, play games, enjoy food and refreshments, and fish for trout (children under 12 only). 10/18 - 10/19 - Rock Hall Country Fair - 11am-5pm - Mark your calendar for a visit to the Rock Hall Country Fair! This year's fair will display a variety of farm animals with a sheep shearing demonstration on Saturday. Visitors will also enjoy a live country band, harvest market, scarecrow making, woodworking, Colonial historian, crafts, delicious food, pony rides and an Early American craft area for children. 10/23 - 10/26 - The Twilight Pumpkin Spectacular - 6-9:30pm - A one-of-a-kind, fun-filled family experience! Dazzling display of more than 3,000 illuminated jack o' lanterns. Spooky music and sound effects add to the mysterious merriment as hand-carved pumpkins, arranged by theme, bring delightful surprises at each meandering pathway. Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn Harbor (516) 484-9337 - Tickets are sold for timed entry; advance ticket sales only. Admission is $14 for adults and seniors and $7 for children 12 and under.
